Panama evaluates Thomas Christiansen's future after 2026 World Cup
The Panama national team is considering renewing Thomas Christiansen for a third cycle after their participation in the 2026 World Cup, where they failed to earn any points. The Danish-Spanish coach, whose contract ended on June 30, could continue leading the team.
Manuel Arias, president of the Panamanian Football Federation, confirmed that they are evaluating Christiansen's renewal or the search for a new coach. The final decision will be made by the end of the year, when the new federation directors take office.
What happened at the 2026 World Cup?
Panama did not earn any points in their second World Cup, losing to Ghana (1-0), Croatia (1-0), and England (2-0). Although they did not score any goals, the team showed improvement compared to their debut in Russia 2018, where they were heavily defeated by Belgium (3-0) and England (6-1).
Thomas Christiansen, 53, became the coach with the most games in charge of Panama (92). Despite criticism for not calling up young striker Kadir Barría and bringing injured players, former goalkeeper Jaime Penedo, the technical director, highlighted the results achieved.
