Concacaf’s Request to FIFA
The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Football (Concacaf) has submitted a request to FIFA to host the 2031 U-20 Men’s World Cup in Central America. According to Rodolfo Villalobos, former president of the Costa Rican Football Federation, the initiative is in preliminary phase and involves Honduras and Costa Rica in the organization of the youth tournament.
Context of Previous Editions
The proposal responds to the fact that the 2027 (Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan) and 2029 (Armenia and Georgia) editions already have their host assignments. With those cycles assigned, the window for possible venues opens for the 2031 cycle, where Central America could compete for the bid.
Panama’s Potential Bid
Although the initial proposal does not include Panama, the country could enter negotiations and submit a formal proposal if the region is awarded the host. Panama recalls the 2020 experience, when FIFA awarded the U‑20 Women’s World Cup jointly to Panama and Costa Rica. Panama’s commitment was withdrawn due to budgetary and sanitary restrictions caused by the covid‑19 pandemic, leading to the tournament being held only in Costa Rica in 2022.
Prepared Infrastructure
To support a bid, Panama has renovations underway at Estadio Rommel Fernández Gutiérrez and Estadio Maracaná in El Chorrillo. The latter stadium will be upgraded with natural grass and is expected to be ready by the end of 2026.
Current Status of the Process
FIFA has not yet issued a formal ratification nor started the bidding process for the 2031 host. The application remains in a preliminary evaluation phase among national federations, where technical and financial viability will be assessed.
Additional Observations
