Panama's team, representing the Liga de Pequeñas Ligas de Doleguita, fell 6-4 to Nicaragua in a dramatic match played at the Los Veteranos stadium in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, in the Mundial de Pequeñas Ligas. The Central Americans took the lead 2-0 in the first inning, taking advantage of the disarray of the Panamanian starter, Obed Fuentes, and with an unstoppable Kendry Araúz. Panama reacted in the bottom of the fifth inning, thanks to a triple by Bryant Quintero, which pushed Jeickot Sánchez and Obed Fuentes to equalize the score, and then took the lead with a single by Josué Hernández, which brought Quintero to the plate. With the match in their favor 3-2, Panama entered the top of the sixth and final inning; however, the disarray of the Panamanian pitcher, Lucas Olmos, initiated the debacle. Olmos walked Nicaraguan Giovany Orroz, and hit Sergio Girón, but a play at third base, which looked clearly like an out, was not conceded by the umpire; the play disoriented the Panamanians, who committed a couple of costly errors that gave Nicaragua a 6-3 lead. Panama came back in the bottom of the sixth inning, managing to fill the bases and score a run; however, Kaled Valdés was put out at the plate to end the match. Nicaragua scored six runs, hitting only one home run, a testament to the poor defensive performance of the Panamanians, who scored four times and connected with seven uncatchable balls. Nicaragua advanced as the first team in the tournament's International Cup, and will face Mexico on Sunday; in contrast, Panama fell in the losers' round, where they cannot lose another match, or they will be definitively eliminated from the tournament, whose competition system is double elimination; that is, the team that loses two matches is automatically eliminated. The team led by Edwin Del Cid will have to wait for the result of the Australia vs. Canada match, scheduled for Monday, August 24. If they win, they will stay alive in the tournament, even with possibilities of disputing the international final, in search of a spot in the Mundial de Pequeñas Ligas final.
